ContinueYolanda, who prefers just Yoli, learned about a community need in Las Cruces the hard way. When her father was diagnosed and ultimately died of lung cancer Yoli found there were few resources available to assist both the cancer patient and the patient’s family. Her son is now a cancer survivor, giving her another hard lesson in the stress and burdens of dealing with the disease. Yoli is now president of CARE, Cancer Aid Resource and Education. CARE is not about research or medical care, but rather about helping patients and their families deal with all that comes with a diagnosis. That can range from emotional support to financial support for things like transportation to treatment, lodging or groceries. Since 2009 the all-volunteer operation has raised more than $600,000 to help those dealing with cancer face the burdens with dignity and courage. #NewMexicoTrue #NewMexicoTrueHEROES #NMTrue
